ACUSTRIP® Nitrogen Test Strip Specifications

480009 * 481109

Please read instructions prior to using product.

Introduction

Using the ACU480009 and ACU481109 series of nitrate/nitrite test strips is the easiest and most inexpensive way to check water for the presence of nitrogen. These Nitrate/Nitrite water quality test strips are safe and easy to use - no technical training is required for our easy to read results.

National Primary Drinking Water Regulations set forth by the USEPA recommend a Nitrate (measured as Nitrogen) level of 10 PPM or less and a Nitrite (measured as Nitrogen) level of 1 PPM or less. The World Health Organization maximum level is 50 mg/L (acute) for Nitrate (as NO3) and 3 mg/L (acute) for Nitrite (as NO2).

General Procedures

  • Start with clean, dry hands and utensils.
  • Run test in a well lit area, natural light if possible.
  • Collect a 500ml sample of water and verify that the pH is above 10.5 but below 11.5.
  • Water sample should be near room temperature.
  • Dip a test strip into the sample for two seconds without any motion.
  • Remove the strip and wait one minute for the colors to develop.
  • Within one more minute match the Nitrate plus Nitrite (end pad) and Nitrate colors to the color chart.
  • Use the test strips by the expiration date on the bottle.
  • Discoloration is caused by exposure for long periods above 90°F, direct sunlight, or leaving the bottle caps open for an extended period of time.
  • Replace cap on the test strip bottle to protect from moisture.
  • With practice, you will gain confidence and proficiency with the test strips.
NOTE: Both pads react with Nitrite. The end pad, which has zinc added, converts the Nitrate to Nitrite and, therefore, reacts with both Nitrate and Nitrite. If the exact Nitrate Nitrogen level is required, then subtract the Nitrite level from the Nitrate plus Nitrite (end pad) level.

Conversion Ratios

Nitrate and Nitrite Nitrogen (as N) test results are usually expressed as PPM or mg/L. If the concetration of Nitrates or Nitrites needs to be expressed as Nitrate (NO3) or Nitrite (NO2) follow the instructions below.

  1. To convert Nitrate Nitrogen concentration to Nitrate concentration, multiply the test strip result by 4.4.
Enter Nitrate Nitrogen:     Nitrate Concentration is:

  2. To convert Nitrite Nitrogen concentration to Nitrite concentration, multiply the test strip result by 3.3.
Enter Nitrite Nitrogen:     Nitrite Concentration is:
